Meet Susan

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

About Me

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with extensive training and experience supporting adults in midlife, older adults, and caregivers. I work with individuals and families as they navigate the emotional, relational, and practical challenges that often accompany aging, illness, and caregiving.

Current Clinical Focus

  • Psychotherapy for older adults: Providing support for anxiety, depression, life transitions, changes in functioning, social isolation, and concerns related to independence and quality of life.

  • Caregiving: Supporting those caring for a loved one as they navigate the emotional and practical demands of caregiving, including dementia-related care, stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue.

  • Chronic and acute illness counseling: Offering support to individuals navigating the emotional challenges of serious or progressive medical conditions, including neurodegenerative disorders (such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease), advanced cardiac and pulmonary disease, and transplant recovery.

Additional Experience:

  • Hospice and bereavement counseling: Helping clients navigate grief, loss, and end-of-life transitions with emotional support and practical tools.

  • Support group facilitation: Leading groups focused on caregiver burnout, dementia care, chronic illness management, and transplant recovery, fostering connection, shared learning, and peer support.

  • Teaching: Serving as an adjunct professor at VCU for Mental Health in Later Life, educating and mentoring future clinicians on the psychological needs of older adults and their families..

I believe healing happens best when we feel seen, understood, and supported as individuals with unique experiences and needs. Outside of my work, I find grounding and clarity through long walks with my dog, spending meaningful time with family and friends, and finding peace in nature. These simple, restorative moments shape how I approach therapy: with presence, compassion, and respect for each person’s unique rhythm and life story.
